Why Are Delhi Metro Stations Closed Today?

The Delhi Metro Alert comes as security has been increased around Jantar Mantar and other parts of New Delhi ahead of a proposed protest.

The protest was organized by the All India Students' Association (AISA), Rajya Sabha MP Manoj Jha, and Supreme Court lawyer Prashant Bhushan. The Delhi Police have not granted permission for the proposed gathering and have deployed additional security personnel in the area.

Authorities have also put restrictions on movement around several roads near Jantar Mantar, Connaught Place, Parliament Street, and nearby areas.

Full List of Affected Metro Stations

Under the current Delhi Metro Alert, entry and exit have been closed at these 11 stations:

Janpath, Patel Chowk, Central Secretariat, Rajiv Chowk, Seva Teerth, Mandi House,
Lok Kalyan Marg, INA, Chawri Bazar, Ramakrishna Ashram Marg, and New Delhi

The closure applies to entry and exit, rather than meaning that the entire metro network has stopped operating.

Interchange Facility Still Available

In this regard, it is hereby clarified that the facilities for the interchange have been maintained at Rajiv Chowk, Mandi House, New Delhi, and Central Secretariat Metro stations. This will enable travelers to utilize the interchanges at these metro stations despite the restrictions on use for other purposes.

What Should Delhi Metro Passengers Do Today?

Delhi Metro Alert implies that travelers going through central Delhi will need to find out information about the route before starting off. Travellers who are headed toward Jantar Mantar, Parliament Street, Connaught Place, and neighbouring areas will also face traffic restrictions. Motorists have been advised by the Traffic Police of Delhi to avoid such areas.

Passengers can consider using alternative metro stations or routes depending on their destination. Those travelling through interchange stations should also allow extra time because of the additional security arrangements.

Security Tightened Around Jantar Mantar

Security arrangements have been upgraded in the Jantar Mantar locality and various other sensitive locations in the city of New Delhi. The Delhi Police and members of the Central Armed Police Force have been deployed, along with erecting barricades in various places.

The scheduled protest is supposed to take place on October 2, and the organizers have expressed apprehensions regarding the working of the Election Commission and the SIR of electoral rolls. These are the demands raised by the organizers of the protest; however, the Delhi Police has not given permission for the proposed protest.

Delhi Metro Service Update

Delhi Metro Alert is presently concentrating on restrictions in particular metro stations in central Delhi. Other parts of the metro system are functioning normally; however, for people who are traveling through such places, it is advisable to keep yourself updated about the current situation before commencing your journey. Since the stations are closed until further notice, commuters should remain alert for any changes in the restrictions during the day.

Conclusion

The Delhi Metro Alert is imposed for entry/exit from 11 metro stations in the center of Delhi on October 2 due to increased security in light of planned Jantar Mantar protests. While several stations have restricted access, interchange facilities remain available at selected locations.

Commuters travelling through central Delhi should plan their routes in advance and check for the latest metro and traffic updates before travelling.
