Asian Games 2026 Begin in Japan
The Asian Games 2026 officially opened in Nagoya on September 19. The opening ceremony was held at the Nagoya City Mizuho Park Athletic Stadium, with the ceremony scheduled to begin at 6 PM local time.
The ceremony included music, dance, and fireworks and symbolised the start of the Games. The opening of the Games was formally announced by Emperor Naruhito. Representatives of 45 countries and regions are taking part in the competition.
This is the third time that Japan has held the Asian Games, following Tokyo’s staging of the event in 1958 and Hiroshima’s in 1994.
India Sends a 503-Member Contingent
India is represented by a 503-member contingent at the Games. The Indian delegation includes athletes competing across several sporting disciplines along with support staff.
Among the Indian team members are not only seasoned players but also some youngsters who will compete in the Asian Games for the first time in their careers. The presence of over 300 debutants among the athletes has been brought to attention by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports.
Manu Bhaker and Pawan Sehrawat lead India
Shooter Manu Bhaker and kabaddi player Pawan Sehrawat led the Indian contingent during the opening ceremony.
Pawan Sehrawat replaced shot putter Tajinderpal Singh Toor as the male flag-bearer after a logistical issue involving Toor's ceremonial kit prevented him from attending the ceremony. Manu Bhaker remained India's female flag-bearer.
Toor is a two-time Asian Games gold medallist and is scheduled to compete in the men's shot put during the Games.
43 Sports and 469 Medal Events
The Asian Games 2026 feature a record programme of 43 sports and 469 medal events. Several sports are making their debut at this edition, including mixed martial arts, padel, surfing, virtual taekwondo and teqball. Esports and breakdancing are also part of the programme.
Competition is being organised throughout the Aichi-Nagoya area as well as other parts of Japan. The Games also have relevance outside the sports calendar of Asia, as some events are qualifying events for the 2028 Olympic Games to be held in Los Angeles.

Athletes from India are participating in games like shooting, athletics, boxing, wrestling, badminton, hockey, cricket and kabaddi.
Cricket forms another sport that is part of India’s campaign. The Indian women’s cricket team is set to play their semi-final match against Bangladesh on September 20, whereas the Indian hockey teams have started their campaigns in the early stages of the competition.
The results from the last Asian Games, which were held in Hangzhou in 2023, provide interesting information. In that event, India managed to win a total of 107 medals, 28 of which were gold medals
However, the 2026 Games have a different sporting programme, and medal performances will depend on results across individual events.
