Introduction
The wound of 8 August 2024 for the RG Kar’s horrific raped and murder case is not healed. Yet some months later, the recent gang rape of a law student of the South Calcutta Law College has renewed the trauma again. A 24-year-old girl student of this college has been brutally gang raped. This crime has immediately come under the media spotlight after the victim complained. Reportedly, all three accused have locked the victim into the guard room to fulfill their abominable intention. According to the investigators, the victim was suffering from breathing issues at the time. The accused brought the inhaler to continue the obnoxious sexual torture that ultimately led to this entire situation. This article has analysed the Kasba gang rape with all the details.

The alleged gang-rape of the law student from the Calcutta University-affiliated institution, South Calcutta Law College, has shocked the entire Bengal. This heinous incident occurred inside the guard room of the college premises, an area reserved for security personnel.

Victim profiles
Monojit Mishra: 31-year-old Monojit Mishra, a prime accused, is a criminal lawyer at the Alipore Police and Sessions Court by profession. Besides, he graduated from the same college and is also working as a temporary staff member there. Reportedly, the person is entangled in a history of multiple instances of molestation of female students and other illegal activities. More than a dozen cases were launched at the Ballygunge, Kalighat, and Kasba police stations. Nevertheless, no steps have in corporated to charge him. The former and present students of the college have stated that he was a politically influenced person and Trinamool Congress Chhatra Parishad leader, which could be the main reason for not taking any serious steps against him after he had conducted numerous illegal activities.
Zeib Ahmed: A 19-year-old student of the same college.
PramitMukhopadhyay: A 20-year-old law student of the same college.
Legal action taken by police
Prompt action by the Kolkata Police
After lodging the complaint by the victim on 26th June at 4:45 p.m., Kolkata Police took prompt action and arrested all 3 accused persons within 12 hours, including the guard on duty at the time. As of July 2, 2025, all the accused persons were remanded to police custody for the next 10 days. A special investigation team (SIT) has been formed to investigate this matter thoroughly. The relevant section of the Indian Penal Code that has been applied to the victims is as follows.
● Section 370D for gang rape.
● Section 342 for the wrongful confinement.
● Section 67 of the Information Technology Act, or IT Act, for threatening to transfer filth material electronically.
● Section 506 for criminal intimidation.
Forensic Steps
The mobile phones of all the accused persons have been seized. These are sent to the cyber forensic lab of the Kolkata Police to recover any audio or video evidence.

Campus security is under the lens
Negligible guard personnel
Reportedly, the mobile phone of the on-duty guard personnel has been snatched by the accused. Furthermore, the accused has threatened the guard not to involve himself and disclose this matter in front of others. Altogether, this event has intensified the concerns regarding the failures in the safety protocols of the institutions.
Institutional negligence
Both the students and teachers have complained previously regarding the lawlessness on the college premises. The guard room has been used as a lounging spot for the students, whereas security was the primary concern. The public has accused Trinamool Congress of sheltering these types of people who were involved in the campus violence, intimidation of the faculty by using their muscle power for many years. It has raised critical questions about policing and administration in West Bengal's educational institutions.
The response from the National Commission for Women, or NCW
The National Commission for Women has enforced suomotu cognizance. The commission has asked West Bengal police to submit a detailed report about the incident, investigate this matter without any bias, and provide assurance for the psychological support and safety of the victim.
