The floods in Bihar have become a major problem for the state, as millions of people have been affected due to the flooding of rivers that are currently above the danger mark in various regions. As per the latest reports released on September 11, more than 46 lakh people have been affected by the floods.
It is especially alarming for the areas that include Bhagalpur, Patna, Saran, Vaishali, Begusarai, Katihar, Purnea and Buxar. The government agencies are carrying out rescue and relief work while monitoring the rising water levels in the rivers.

What Is the Current Flood Situation in Bihar?
The most recent scenario regarding the floods in Bihar is that although there are indications of water levels in certain rivers coming down, the overall situation is still quite serious, with the State Disaster Management Department reporting that over 46 lakh people have been affected in 85 blocks spread over 15 districts.
Some of the major rivers continue to be above the danger level. Ganga is still above the danger level at several points in Patna, Munger, Bhagalpur, and Kahalgaon. Kosi is also above the danger level at points such as Baltara in Khagaria and Kursela.
However, the government has also reported that there has been a slight improvement in water levels within the last 24 hours. For instance, the Punpun River at Sripalpur, in Patna, has been receding.
Which Areas Are Worst Affected?
The effects of the flood disaster are being experienced in much of Bihar. Some of the affected areas include the districts of Bhagalpur, Patna, Saran, Vaishali, Begusarai, Katihar, Purnea, and Buxar.
The issue is quite worrisome in Bhagalpur. Reportedly, five individuals, four of whom were children, and one woman died due to drowning in the floodwaters in the Koyli Khutaha village on September 11. This case indicates the danger that villagers are facing due to flooding in their villages, making roads and surroundings inaccessible.
Floods have also caused disruption of routine activities in a number of places. In Patna and other flooded areas, water has entered the low-lying areas, and there has been an impact on connectivity between villages and the district headquarters.
Why Have Bihar Floods Become So Severe?
This situation arises due to increasing water levels in the Ganga River and other main rivers, along with precipitation in Bihar and adjoining regions.
Geography is another factor that contributes to the increased vulnerability of Bihar to floods. The state is crisscrossed by several major rivers, such as the Ganga, Kosi, Gandak, Bagmati, and Punpun rivers. The inflow of water from upstream can create great stress on rivers.
It has also been reported lately that the existing floods cannot be simply attributed to rain within Bihar. The increase in the water level of the Ganges River and water coming from the upper parts have played an important part in escalating the situation. That is how a river may become dangerously swollen despite the decrease in rainfall in a certain place.
What Is the Government Doing?
Rescue and relief operations have been intensified in the stricken districts. As per the reports received from the government, hundreds of boats are being utilised to facilitate movement in flood-stricken areas, whereas NDRF and SDRF units have been employed for rescue operations.
Besides, community kitchens and medical camps have been arranged for people suffering from this natural calamity by providing food and other necessary facilities. More than 1,000 community kitchens have been arranged, and medical camps have been set up.
The government is keeping a watchful eye on embankments and river levels, especially those that have exceeded the danger level. The importance of this response is the scale of the problem that is being addressed; families that have been affected can only resume their daily lives when the floodwaters subside and become reachable again.

For people living in flood-prone areas, the immediate priority remains safety and access to essential supplies. Although water levels have started falling in some locations, officials are continuing to monitor downstream areas where the situation can change quickly.
The floods in Bihar update reflects that while there are some rivers where there is an improvement, the problem of high levels of people affected persists, and there are rivers flowing over danger marks.
