Historical background of India's Independence Day

The historical context of Independence Day is rooted in the colonial period, when India was under British control. The fight for Indian Independence stemmed back to the non-cooperation movement in 1920 to 22, the civil disobedience movement in 1939 to 1932 and the Quit India movement in 1942.

After the completion of World War II, the British were generally exhausted, which also supported India's independence.

The granting of India's Independence was formalised through the Indian Independence Act of 1947, which created the two different countries, India and Pakistan.

The midnight hours of 15th August led to the destiny for India, which witnessed Independence.

Theme for Independence Day 2025

The 79th Independence Day of India in 2025’s official theme has not been released yet, but it is all about “Honouring Freedom, Inspiring the Future”. Dependent on the aspects of unity, National progress and inclusive growth, India is going forward to become a 5 trillion dollar economy at the end of 20147, which would be the centenary of Independence. The main themes will be associated with the contemporary vision of “Amrit Kaal” where the transitions came into picture through diversity, sustainability, innovation and social harmony.

How was the day of 15th August 1947?

India witnessed the golden moments on 15 August 1947, when the country broke all the shackles imposed by the British for approximately 200 years. Ustad Bismillah Khan played the sehnai on this day at the Red Fort in New Delhi before the speech of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of independent India. On the Midnight of this historic day,  Jawaharlal Nehru remarked, “a tryst with destiny,” which means the moment which comes but rarely in ages.

Why was 15th August chosen as Independence Day?

Regardless of the fact that the Indian Independence Act of 1947 was approved on 18th July 1947, Lord Louis Mountbatten,  the last viceroy, decided to advance the date and chose August 15 1947, to transfer power to the Indian government. He also claimed that the date had been selected as it was the second anniversary of Japan's surrender in World War II.
